Sesame Cookware is something
totally new, it's a cookware which will watch your back while you
are preparing the next dinner. Once the temperature rises and the
water starts boiling the glass part of the lid opens. If you then
reduce the power the lid closes, still keeping the water boiling!
This is a perfect over boiling guard and it's still a normal lid.
Using the patented Sesame Lid makes it possible for you to use a lid when
you would normally take the lid off - due to the risk of over
boiling. This will reduce the waste of energy.
How
does it work? A wax thermostat is used, the same kind as is used in
every car. Once the wax starts to melt it expands and forces a
piston to move and this movement will act on a mechanism that opens
the glass lid. It's very simple, controls the boiling very well and
is very robust.
The lid could be advertised as
a unique selling proposition and is energy saving since lid can be
used more when food is prepared. This makes it possible for a
cookware brand, producer or entrepreneur to be able to offer
something special. Cookwares are all advertised as a quality
cookware with a great design and in some cases a low price. For
other products features are of great importance, this is not the
case for cookware, simply for the reason, there are almost no
features.
Having a lid that opens and closes, controlling the boiling is a
feature that would make the brand stand out.
There is a Swedish patent. Is it expensive? A wax element used in
milions of cars can be used in this application, for high volume
production a wax element would cost just above 1€ per part.
I got a quote on less then 2€ and this was on a volume of
only 500 pieces.
Cookware with lid on a stove. With high power the lid opens and when the power is reduced the lid closes. If too much power is used the lid simply compensates for that by a greater opening. For example: Boiling pasta with a lid is now possible, and leaving boiling rice will not result in cleaning activites. Don't be limited to the designs I have come up with. This serves as design exemples only.
Video showing how my home made mechanism works. Important to have in mind is that the design is very depending on what I have been able to do on my own in my garage. The tools and resources have been limited, for a production solution it would have been made differently.
My name is Fredrik Lagerlöf and I'm a Swedish engineer and I have been
working in the automotive industry for 17 years. I started out as a
mechanical designer within oil and coolant system but moved into
electronics after 7 years. Now I'm working as a software developer.
